The Native Planet Classic, held in the breathtaking North Cascades, is an
exciting fun-filled event for cyclists and non-cyclists alike. It’s a unique
opportunity to enjoy both the great company of the participants AND the charming
Western ambience of Winthrop, WA. There’s also a complete range of
accommodations there from tent camping to a sophisticated resort, so it makes a
perfect weekend getaway for cyclists, spouses and friends.
Just as important though, is that it is the primary source for funding for
Native Planet, an international non-profit organization that facilitates the
self-empowerment of traditional peoples worldwide. The pledges raised during
this ride provide more than 75% of the funding for our on-site malaria control
work and other projects in Indonesia.
You don’t need to be a cyclist or a management professional to help us
out—all you need is enthusiasm and willingness! We are looking for friendly
people who can commit to some hard but truly enjoyable work. Many positions are
available: Some require work during the event and others can be done beforehand
to allow riding on event day. Here are the positions we need your help for:
Administrative
Coordinator

Responsibilities include:
- Submission of pre-written proposal forms to
local authorities (DOT, Winthrop City, North Cascade NP)
- Reserve the Winthrop Barn, portable toilets and
ambulance that we rent every year
- Arrange course signalization and posters/signs
for support vehicles
- Prepare mechanical equipment (pumps, tubes,
tires, basic tools)
These are done mainly by email and phone and require
no travel. It isn’t very time consuming, but starts in the summer/fall for
the following year and requires a committed and trustworthy person who is
good at following up. The Admin Coordinator would be able to ride the NPC. |
Volunteer Coordinator and/or
Manager (1 or 2 positions)
Responsibilities include:
- Recruit volunteers (mail to NPOC members,
forums, websites etc)
- Communicate with the volunteers to keep them
current and involved throughout the year
- Inspire volunteers and help create a team that
knows its participation is essential to the success of the Native Planet
Classic and Native Planet
- Coordinate the work of volunteers on the
weekend of
event. This could be a separate position if someone could do everything
else but not be physically present on the day of event.

Food Administrator
Responsibilities include:
- Plan and
purchase all food using full lists with quantities based on estimated
number of participants
- Organize all
facets of food transport from Seattle to ride food stops
- Organize the
food stops equipment (canopies, tables, cutting boards, knives, etc.)
- Order special
foods such as
sandwiches/wraps and arrange for their deliveries
- Organize the
transportation and distribution of the water
- Assist with
the packing of all food at the end of the event and its distribution to volunteers
- Collect
reports from food stop volunteers and feedback from participants to
write a summary that will allow us to improve next year’s event
- Write a report
of all the food that was purchased and how much was left to better plan
for the future years.

Barn Manager
Responsibilities include:
- Negotiate
sponsorship and/or purchase of dinners
for all participants (end of ride) and all volunteers (Friday and
Saturday)
- Recruit and
manage the kitchen volunteers who will cook dinner, serve food and clean
the barn
- Pick-up the
keys from the barn (or let the first volunteers on site know where and
how)
- Coordinate the
warm up and serving of the dinners at the barn
- Assist the
Food Administrator with the packing of all food at the end of the event
and its distribution to volunteers
- Distribute the
NPC feedback form to all participants while they eat dinner
- Coordinate the
cleaning of the Barn and return the keys after closing it and turning
off all the lights and equipment.

Marketing/PR Manager
Responsibilities include:
- Manager recruits, trains and coordinates the
work of Marketing/PR specialists who work on the below listed tasks
- Contact all local magazines including Bicycling
Paper, Northwest Outdoor Sports, etc., to have the NP Classic event
listed in their calendars beginning previous summer
- Coordinate the printing and distribution of NP
Classic event posters and flyers to main cycling shops in Washington
State and, if possible Oregon and British Colombia beginning previous
fall (digital files are designed and ready for printing)
- Contact cycling clubs and associations to
negotiate cross-linking of our website and cross-marketing of our
events
- Develop a marketing strategy to improve the
promotion of the NP Classic.
These are done mainly by email and phone and may also require some driving; tasks begin in the summer/fall for the following year and require people who are good at PR, marketing and/or have great people skills. The Marketing/PR Manager and Specialists would be able to ride the NPC. |
Sponsorship Manager
Responsibilities include:
- Recruits, trains and coordinates the
work of sponsorship specialists who work on the below listed tasks
- Research and contact potential sponsors for
this event including food, energy drinks/foods, hotels, raffle gifts,
gifts for top fundraisers, etc.
- Research sponsorship for the club including
cycling equipment and services, etc.
- Negotiate
accommodation sponsorship and/or discounts for volunteers and or
participants
These are done mainly by email and phone beginning in the summer/fall for the following year and require people who are good communicators and have great people skills. The Sponsorship Manager and Specialists would be able to ride the NPC.

Event Director
Responsibilities include:
- Recruit, train, manage and assist the work of
all other managers
- Report to the president and communicate with the NPOC board of directors
and all volunteers about event progress
- Prepare and submit the event budget to the NPOC
treasurer for
approval
- • Collect data from all positions and do post-event analysis for possible improvements; implement improvements as needed.
